Down Time A-Lodge Style

A little bit of down time at the A-lodge means it is time for a prank. Catie had to open the front desk at 6:30. Alan and Clifton decided to make it look like they had a hard night of partying behind the desk, enjoy.

I don’t think I will be getting the Alta/Bird pass this winter

Richard Bass, who owns the Utah resort, has partnered with William H. Hunt to form PacRim Coal LLC, which has submitted permit applications to build a giant coal mine that the groups say would not only raise the planet’s temperature but also destroy 11 miles of prime salmon streams feeding the Cook Inlet.

Take a second to send him an email, and buy a Alta pass instead.

Storm Days

Wild Cat Pow from Scott Lommele on Vimeo.

I think anyone that regularly skis Alta can agree, storm days are better than blue bird powder days.  I think the canyon may have been closed for a while in the morning, so we got some nice country club action at the start.

Janky Films Salty Days

Salty Days

Janky Films released Salty Days a few weeks ago, saw some of these guys filming up in Grizzly Gulch and Rocky point over the winter.  They put together a sweet free 33 minute movie from the past season.  A little bit of something for everyone, cliffs, Wasatch blower, park, double flips, and much more.  Go to Janky Films to check it out.

ON3P Skis VS Scott USA

For those of you who don’t know ON3P Skis is a small company based out of Portland, OR, founded in 2006.  Recently the founder of the company Scott Andrus posted the following on the Teton Gravity Research forums.

This post is meant to inform anyone who has to date purchased a “Great Scott” ski from ON3P, or those who are considering a future purchase. In late October, ON3P received a cease and desist order from SCOTT USA Ltd., and its affiliates SCOTT Sports SA and SCOTT USA Inc., demanding ON3P immediately cease commercialization and sales of all “Great Scott” branded skis for reasons of trademark infringement.

We are current exploring the legality of the use of “Scott” in the name of our ski “Great Scott” and should reach a decision in the near future.

Once we have reached a decision, I will post an update on the matter.

Sometimes Ya Just Gotta Give’r

New episode of Salomon Freeski TV was posted a few days ago, I do not think I have ever seen a better compilation of big air bails.  My favorite is the guy who loses both skis before getting to the second cliff.

Rocky Point and Patsy Marley Lap

Patsy Marley at 10,525 ft is just outside of the boundaries of Alta, here is a view of it from my room at the Alta Lodge.

Ian, Alan, and I headed up late in the day after a small storm had come through and left us with a nice fresh coat of snow.  It had gotten a bit windy during the day but the snow over in Rocky Point was still great.  We decided to head up Patsy Marley and see what we could find.  When we got to the top we started to traverse over to find a spot that was a little less tracked out.  Patsy Marley is only about a 20 minute hike from the top of Rocky Point, so it can see a fair amount of traffic on a good day.  Although I did not find an area that was completely untracked I was still able to get some good snow and make some great turns.  Here is a short video starting with Rocky Point and finishing on Patsy Marley.

Going Deep

One of the hidden treasures at Alta is an area named Keyhole.  It is usually closed for avy control after big storms, but when it opens up it can a good place to find some of the deepest snow on the mountain.  I headed over to the Keyhole late one afternoon with a fellow Alta Lodge employee Alan, we were some of the first people to get into the area after the storm.  Alan told me that I should follow him down because he knew of a really cool line though a tight chute.  It all sounded like a great idea to me, so I took out the helmet camera to film.  As you can see in the video the snow was great, but the run did not end up as we had planned.  A little bit of ice and rock in the chute caused Alan to fall, and by the time I saw him it was too late to do anything but bail.  One more pole lost, but no worries Alan found me another pair the next day.
